What is a Passionate Disciple?

Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will make you into fishers of people.” (Matthew 4:19)
  • “Come” – A passionate disciple is WITH Jesus. By this we mean that someone has come into relationship with Jesus Christ, receiving his grace and forgiveness.
  • “Follow me” – A passionate disciple follows Jesus’ ways. What are Jesus’ ways? We have identified 8 core practices of a passionate disciple as a starting point.

1.  Community – Growing with others in a small group setting through vulnerable accountability, prayer, study, encouragement, and simply doing life together.
2.  Prayer – Deepening one’s relationship with God by talking and listening to God both alone and with others.
3.  Scripture – Reading and reflecting on Bible passages and submitting to their teachings in order to know and love God.
4.  Service – Applying one’s spiritual gifts, personality traits, and passion to build God’s Kingdom and do justice both inside and outside the church.
5.  Witness – Sharing the gospel with pre-Christian people through authentic friendships, community engagement, Christ-centered parenting, and world mission.
6.  Stewardship – Managing the resources God has entrusted to us (time, money, creation, body, etc.) in order to advance God’s mission in the world.
7.  Worship – Praising and exalting God when gathered with other believers and living in the Triune God’s presence as a lifestyle.
8.  Sabbath – Setting aside a day each week to intentionally rest, contemplate, and delight in God.

  • “I will make you into” – A passionate disciple is transformed by Jesus. When we encounter Jesus and begin to follow his ways, we are transformed by his grace. He makes us into something we were not before. He changes our heart and our character by the power of the Holy Spirit, and he gives us a new mission – his mission.
  • “Fishers of people” – A passionate disciple participates in the mission of Jesus. Jesus gives us new marching orders – he tells us we are now fishers of people, and he has entrusted us with the mission of multiplying passionate disciples (see Matthew 28:19-20).

Our Strategy: How do we make Passionate Disciples?

Engage: Ministries or strategies that connect us with unchurched people to befriend them, invite them to TMC, and make Jesus known.

Encounter: Ministries or strategies that introduce people to a transformative, personal relationship with Jesus and our church family.

Equip: Ministries or strategies that deepen people's relationship and commitment to Jesus in community.

Extend: Ministries or strategies that lead people outward by deploying them to multiply passionate disciples through our E4 system and beyond.

We also have ministries and strategies dedicated to this E4 Discipleship Process for our Next Generation and ministries and strategies that Support behind the scenes.
